I felt that it would be appropriate to take the time to talk about what Chess4Life is all about...inevitably, many people will run across our Weblog here and they may have never been involved or even heard about Chess4Life before.
What is Chess4Life all about?
Chess4Life: Teaching Life Skills Through Chess
We were especially particular in choosing this name for our company, because we feel it really makes clear our mission statement, and clearly identifies what we do and where our intentions lie. "Chess for life" means that chess is merely the vehicle we use to help teach life's lessons with, so that those lessons and not neccessarily the game of chess itself will have a profound impact upon the future of our youth, which, as we see it, is the most important investment any of us can make.
The study of chess and developement of one's skill and proficiency in the game has shown with high probability to increase math skills, concentration, memory, and self-confidence. It's no wonder that many schools have begun to mainstream chess classes in their curriculums.
It is very important to us, that students in our programs receive only the highest quality coaching. The team of coaches working with us, aside from all being incredibly strong chess players, are all great role models for the students in our program. Not only do students increase their chess game and benefit from the associated cognitive boons, but they also learn important values and principles from
great examples.
Elliott Neff, founder of Chess4Life, has taught and coached chess for nearly fifteen years, and has a true passion for what Chess4Life's mission represents.
"My wish in promoting chess is to advance the overall good of the students with whom I interact. As such, chess is exceptional in developing self-discipline, responsibility for one's actions, concentration, math skills, calculation, social skills, and many other excellent qualities. For these reasons, chess is now included in many school curriculums, as well as being on the road to officially becoming an Olympic Sport."
Coming up in May, Elliott will be heading down to Nashville for the National Scholastic Chess Championships with the Stevenson Elementary chess team, the same team he coached to victory in the 2005 K-5 National Championships.
Chess4Life is very excited about where it's going, and the new growth and excitement bustling around the chess community as this timeless game gains renewed momentum and excitement.
